Where is God in suffering?

If you are struggling with this question—or if you know someone who is—bring your questions to our online book club, and prepare to meet God in the painful, raw, and unlikely places that shape your life and impact our world.

Join Sister Mary Martha for weekly discussions, prayer, and faith sharing focused on our new book Finding God in Suffering by Father Christopher M. Mahar.

This insightful book is the perfect way to journey through Lent and Easter. Get a running start into Lent 2024 with our book club, and discover how "even in suffering, we can find love."

The Daughters of St. Paul online book club meets weekly via Zoom to discuss one or more chapters from the featured book. Participants will be emailed a reading schedule, a Zoom link to join the discussions, and some ground rules and guiding principles for our discussions.

The spring 2024 book club runs from Wednesday, January 31 through Wednesday, April 3. We meet every Wednesday evening (except Ash Wednesday) from 8:00-9:00 PM Eastern Time (7:00-8:00 PM Central Time) via Zoom.

We highly recommend it! The more consistent our online community, the stronger our book club will be, and the better you will get to know the participants. However, we understand if you need to miss a session. All sessions are recorded, so if you cannot attend one or more evenings, you can watch the recording to catch up on missed conversation.

Finding God in Suffering is available for purchase from the Pauline Books & Media Center nearest you or on our webstore. An e-book version is also available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble Nook, and Kobo.

There is no cost to participate, other than purchasing the book. If you are able to make a free-will offering to help defray some of the costs of running the book club and support the Daughters of St. Paul mission, we gratefully welcome what you are able to offer at pauline.org/sharegifts. Thank you for helping us keep this program running!

Click below to register for the book club. After registration, Sister Mary Martha will email you a reading plan and Zoom link to join the meetings.

About Finding God in Suffering

Why is there so much suffering? How can I make sense of my own pain? Where is God in the midst of it all?

Father Christopher M. Mahar, a Catholic priest of the Diocese of Providence, Rhode Island, addresses these questions and more with empathy, conviction, and hope as he draws from nearly twenty years of teaching and pastoral counseling experience. Guided by the writings of Saint John Paul II on the Christian meaning of human suffering, Father Mahar combines theological reflection with narratives from history, literature, scripture, and the saints to unfold the mysterious truth that “even in suffering, we can find love.”

I wish I didn't need this book, but I do. We all do, because so much of life is occupied with suffering ... Jesus Christ shows us the way through.
